Decorating a New Home: Where Do I Start?

So, you've recently moved into a new home and now you're faced with the task of decorating it. One of the great things about moving into a new home is that offers the opportunity to decorate with a blank palette so to speak. You get to start fresh, decorating your home the way YOU want to. As such, this can also be overwhelming, which is why some homeowners seek help.

Paint the Walls

One of the first steps in decorating a new home -- even before arranging the furniture -- is painting the walls. Unless the walls are the perfect color, you'll need to paint them. So, head to the nearest home improvement store and pick up some paint swatches. You can then scatter them throughout your home, checking to see which color looks best. Once you've selected a paint color, go back to the store, buy the paint, and start painting.

Unpack the Boxes

Have you unpacked all of your boxes? If you not, you should begin taking those first steps towards doing so. There's nothing more unattractive than seeing a home filled to the ceiling with boxes. Go through each and every box, removing your belongings and placing them in the appropriate location. If you can't find a location to place an item, store it out of the way in either the attic or basement.

Arrange the Furniture

After painting the walls and unpacking your boxes, you can begin to arrange the furniture. For the living room, many homeowners prefer the traditional L-shaped arrangement. It's a clean, classic and simple design that works well for nearly all living rooms. Alternatively, you can use a U-shaped furniture arrangement in the living room. These are both excellent arrangement styles that you really can't go wrong using.

Decorate the Walls

Now comes the fun part: decorating the walls. Hopefully, you've followed our advice and left the walls blank up to this point, as this gives you ultimate freedom to decorate it the way you want. Once the paint has dried, you can begin adding decorative accessories to the walls. Whether it's paintings, photos, vinyl wall art or even cuckoo clocks, the possibilities are endless. Feel free to experiment with a variety of wall decorations to see what works and what doesn't.
