Stylish Home Lighting Alternatives

Lighting is instrumental in creating an attractive and functional home. While traditional overhead fixtures is the most common lighting option for residential homes, there are other lighting types from which to choose. So, if you're looking to update your home's decor, consider the following alternative lighting options.

One alternative lighting option for the home that's becoming increasingly popular is uplighting. As the name suggests, it projects light "up" instead of down. Uplighting can be used either indoors or outdoors to enhance the decor and create a more appealing environment. Furthermore, you can adjust uplighting to focus on specific areas, such as wall art or a cuckoo clock.

Pendant Lighting

Another alternative lighting option for the home is pendant lighting. Also known as drop or suspender lighting, it's characterized by a single fixture that hangs from a long cord, chain or rod. Pendant lights are typically used in groups of two or more, however. When installed over a dining room table, they help to balance the atmosphere while illuminating the surrounding area with light.

There are also billiard and island lights, which are essentially a longer variation of pendant lighting.

Track Lighting

A third alternative lighting option is track lighting. Track lighting isn't a fixture, but rather it's a method of lighting that involves the use of multiple fixtures on a track (hence the name). Track lighting can be installed on ceilings or walls, with some tracks featuring adjustable designs. The only downside to track lighting is that it can be somewhat difficult to install, as it requires a line voltage running through the track itself.

String Lighting

Of course, string lighting is another trending lighting alternative for the home. This is the same type of lights that are hung on Christmas trees during the holidays. Some homeowners hang them across across their walls and ceilings to create a unique, stylish decorative atmosphere. As you can expect, however, string lights aren't particularly powerful, nor do they offer substantial illumination. Therefore, they are generally used in conjunction with other lighting options.

Fiber Optics Lighting

Finally, fiber optics lighting is an alternative form of illumination worth considering for your home. It involves the use of fiber optics strings through which light flows. Fiber optics doesn't provide much in terms of illumination power, but it excels in its stylish appearance. Furthermore, fiber optics lighting is available in countless colors, allowing homeowners to create a brilliant and dazzling display of lights.
