Rules to Follow When Decorating with Black and White

Black is often viewed as a poor choice of color in home decor, with many designers believing it creates a "gloomy" atmosphere. If black is the only color used in a home, it can certainly hurt the decor by making the space feel smaller and more confined. However, using any single color can have similar negative effects. So if you want to incorporate black into your home decor, it's best to use it in conjunction with another color, such as white. Black and white is the perfect combination for a modern home, assuming you follow some basic guidelines.

Avoid Black Walls

When decorating your home in a black and white color scheme, it's best to avoid using black on the walls. Again, this is because black creates an optical illusion that makes spaces feel smaller and more confined. White, however, is perfectly fine to use on the walls. Alternatively, you could use an entirely different color for your walls. The bottom line is that you should avoid using all-black walls in your home decor.

Multi-Color Furnishings

Don't limit yourself to only using black or white furnishings in your home decor. Perhaps you could use furnishings feature BOTH black and white. These multi-colored furnishings are a brilliant addition to any home, laying the foundation for a eye-catching, aesthetically pleasing atmosphere. And best of all, you can still compliment them with traditional all-black or all-white furnishings.

Keep it Clean

If you're going to decorate your home in black and white, you'll need to take a proactive approach towards keeping it clean. Black and white is a brilliant color combination, but unfortunately these colors show dirt more easily than other colors. Try to get into the habit of vacuuming and dusting at least twice per week to maintain a clean environment.

Clean Lines

Black and white is all about creating a modern theme. And if you look at real-world examples of modern home decor, you'll notice that many of them feature clean lines. For this reason, you should follow a similar approach by also using clean lines in your home decor.

Add Accent Colors

In addition to a black and white color scheme, you should consider adding other accent colors in your home decor. Taupe is an excellent accent color, as it flows cohesively with the theme of black and white decor. The key thing to remember is that you should use accent colors sparingly. They should not be the primary focal point of the decor.
