How to Decorate a Sunroom

A sunroom is the perfect place to relax and unwind in the afternoon and early evening. Characterized by the presence of many windows -- and, in some cases, windows on the ceiling -- it's a brilliant addition to a modern-day home. Using your sunroom, you can read a book or simply bask in the sun from the comfort of your own home. To take full advantage of this space, though, you should invest the necessary time and energy into decorating it. Here are a few tips to follow when decorating your sunroom.

Add Plants

Plants are an excellent decorative accessory for any room, and a sunroom is no exception. They bring new colors and life to the environment, thereby promoting a more complete and comprehensive decor. While all rooms can benefit from decorative plants, they are particularly useful in sunrooms because of their natural appearance. Just remember to place them areas where they'll receive the most sunlight.

Light Colors

While there's no rule stating that you must decorate your sunroom in light colors, doing so almost always has a more positive impact on the decor than using dark colors. This is because the fundamental purpose of a sunroom is to allow natural sunlight to enter the home. With windows covering the walls, sunlight will shine through and illuminate the space. If you decorate your sunroom with black or other dark colors, it will dilute the sunroom's natural illuminating effect. This is why it's recommended that you stick with light colors when decorating your sunroom.

Don't Obstruct Windows

I know this probably sounds like common sense, but you should use caution to avoid accidentally obstructing the windows in your sunroom. Installing large curtains over the windows or placing furniture in front of them restricts the amount of light that can enter. And when there's little or no sunlight entering your sunroom, you won't be able to use this space to its full potential.

Relaxing Furniture

When choosing furniture for your sunroom, consider both aesthetics and function. Relaxing furniture works incredibly well here because of the sunroom's naturally relaxing environment. A comfortable day bed or reclining love seat, for instance, instills both beauty and functionality into your sunroom. You'll be able to use your sunroom to relax and rest more easily when it features relaxing furniture.
