How to Decorate Empty Walls in Your Home

The golden rule of home decorating 101 is to avoid empty spaces on the wall. Whether it's the living room, bedroom, foyer, dining room, kitchen, etc., you should fill the walls with decorative accessories; otherwise, the environment will suffer from a voided, lackluster appearance that does your home no justice. So, what are some of the best solutions to decorate empty walls?

Shadow Boxes

A versatile and effective decorating solution that works well in nearly all rooms is shadow boxes. Basically, these are three-dimensional boxes that can either stand alone or be used in conjunction with other decorative accessories. Because of their three-dimensional structure, shadow boxes offer a unique style that's not available in decorations that sit flush with the wall.

Cuckoo Clocks

Cuckoo clocks are always an excellent decoration to fill empty wall spaces. Some people assume that cuckoo clocks are just ordinary timepieces, but this couldn't be further from the truth. Each cuckoo clock is handcrafted with an emphasis on detail and craftsmanship. As a result, they combine elements of artistic value and traditional timekeeping.

Paintings

Perhaps the most common decorative accessory for walls is paintings. One of the great things about paintings is the vast color they bring to the environment. Regardless of how your home is currently decorated, you can probably find a painting (or several) to compliment the decor.

Keep in mind that you don't have to use genuine paintings to fill blank walls in your home. Replica "prints" look almost the same, and to the unsuspecting user, there's little-to-no difference at all. The only real difference is the price. Prints typically sell for a fraction of the price of their genuine counterpart.

Shelves

Of course, you can always install shelves on your wall as well. Once installed, shelves will open the doors to a whole new world of decorating possibilities. You can place candles, framed photos, artwork and other accessories here.

These are just a few ways to decorate empty walls in your home. When choosing decorations, consider the surrounding color and how it will affect the decor. If you the room is decorated in black and white, for instance, you should avoid using brown decorative accessories (black and brown don't match). Additionally, you should consider the overall balance of the decorative accessories. Filling one wall with decorative accessories while leaving an adjacent wall empty isn't a good idea.
