With the fall season upon us, there's no better time than the present to go outdoors and enjoy the mild weather. Assuming you have a patio -- and most homes do -- you can invite friends and family over for a relaxing outdoor party. Before doing so, however, you should consider enhancing your patio with one or more of the following additions.
Not surprisingly, one of the most popular additions to a patio is a fire pit. According to the American Home Furnishings Alliance 2015 Survey, 38% of homeowners said they purchased a fire pit last year. A fire pit offers both functional and decorative benefits; it enhances the decor of the patio, while also providing warmth and cooking purposes. If you're going to invest in a fire pit, though, be sure to get a cover for it. Most fire pits will rust when exposed to moisture -- a phenomenon that a synthetic cover can prevent.
Of course, no patio is complete without an outdoor dining table. Without a dining table, you won't be able to fully enjoy this extension of your home. Thankfully, there are hundreds of different outdoor dining tables, all of which are designed to withstand the otherwise harsh environment of the outdoors. Some are even equipped with umbrellas to protect against sun exposure. Check to see where and when the sun strikes your patio. If the sun beams down at prime times, choose a table with a built-in umbrella.
Equally as important to a patio is comfortable seating. After all, a dining table is only beneficial if there's seating nearby. You don't have to limit yourself to only choosing basic chairs, though. Rather, consider some more unique styles like chaise lounge chairs, Adirondack chairs, swings, benches, etc.
Ever wish you could listen to music while enjoying your patio? Granted, you can always use a portable stereo, but a more refined solution is a built-in stereo for your patio. These stereo systems are designed specifically for outdoor use, featuring weatherproof components and high-end features. As a side benefit, some even come with intercoms, meaning you can talk to other members of your family in different parts of the house.
Last but not least, consider adding an outdoor rug to your patio. This will provide a unique touch to the decor, helping to define specific areas. Outdoor rugs are also great for protecting high-traffic areas, including those in a patio. However, you'll need to choose a rug that's made of a weatherproof material, such as vinyl.
