Easy Ways to Update Your Bathroom Tile

Tile consistently ranks as one of the most popular materials for bathroom floors, walls and fixtures. Whether it's porcelain, ceramic or vinyl, you can rest assured knowing that it creates an attractive, functional environment in your bathroom. With that said, however, tile -- like every other material -- will eventually degrade. it typically doesn't happen overnight, but bathroom tile will eventually fade, crack and experience other characteristic signs of aging. Before spending a fortune on new solutions, you should consider the following ways to restore your bathroom's tile.

Clean It Up

The first step in updating the appearance of your bathroom tile is to clean it. Even if the tile looks clean, it's probably harboring mold and mildew. If left unchecked, this microbial growth will spread to other areas of your bathroom. So, using a scrub brush and cleaning product, start cleaning your tile. With a little bit of elbow grease,  even the dirtiest tiles should come clean

Paint It

If you really want to change the appearance of your bathroom tile, consider painting it. Contrary to what many homeowners believe, it's perfectly fine to paint over tile. In fact, this is a quick and easy way to update your bathroom decor with new color. If your bathroom currently features faded white tiles, for instance, you can paint over it with red for instant vigor.

Keep in mind, however, that the tile must be completely clean for the paint to stick. If there's mold or mildew covering the surface, the paint will likely drip right off. The bottom line is that you must clean your bathroom tile before attempting to paint over it; otherwise, it's not going to hold.

Install New Tile Over the Existing Tile

Another idea is to install new tile over your bathroom's existing tile. Granted, you can always tear up and remove old tile flooring, but doing so is a time-consuming, tedious and downright laborious process. An easier solution is to simply install new tile over your bathroom's existing tile.

The key thing to remember when installing new tile over old tile is to use a level surface. If your existing bathroom floor tile is slanted or otherwise not level, it will show in your new tile.

These are just a few ways to update the appearance of your bathroom tile. You can always remove the tile and replacing it with something else as an alternative. However, the solutions listed will allow you to quickly change your bathroom tile.
