Install Blackout Curtains

Also known as thermal curtains, blackout curtains are designed specifically to block at least 99% of light from passing through. Therefore, installing them in your bedroom will create a darker, more relaxing environment that ultimately helps you sleep at night. As a side benefit, you'll also benefit from lower cooling expenses in the summer, as blackout curtains reduce solar gains.

Use Mood Lighting

Another bedroom design tip to promote better sleep is to install mood lighting. What is mood lighting exactly, and how can it help you sleep? Mood lighting simply refers to any lighting with adjustable illumination. Normally, light fixtures have two modes: on and off. With mood light, you can change the power of the lighting to accommodate your needs. When the sun goes down and you want to relax in bed with a bed, you can turn down the power. And when the sun comes up and you're ready to get out of the bed, you can turn it up.

Skip the TV

Do you really need a TV in your bedroom? Some people leave their bedroom TV on at night, believing it helps them fall asleep. However, studies have shown that TVs make it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep. So, consider leaving the TV out of your bedroom decor. If you want to watch a movie or show in the middle of night, go the living room. The bedroom should be designed with minimal distractions -- and this includes a TV.

Paint the Walls With Relaxing Colors

Painting the walls of your bedroom with relaxing colors like blue, teal or purple can have a positive impact on your sleeping habits. These colors naturally reduce stress and anxiety, thereby making it easier for you to fall asleep and stay asleep.

Replace the Mattress

How old is the mattress on which you sleep? If it's older than a decade, it's good idea to replace it. Mattresses lose their support over time, which can negatively affect a person's sleep. Furthermore, mattresses tend to accumulate several pounds of dust, dead skin and sweat. If you want to achieve the best possible sleeping environment in your bedroom, bite the bullet and buy a new mattress.
