Bedroom Decor: Back to the Basics

Decorating the bedroom doesn't have to be a difficult or time-consuming process. Regardless of your experience in home decorating, you can transform your bedroom into a brilliant, aesthetically pleasing extension of your home with minimal effort. Just follow the basic decorating guidelines below and you'll be well on your way to creating a stylish bedroom.

Embrace Natural Light

Lighting plays an important role in both the appearance and function of bedrooms. Rather than only using artificial light in your bedroom, though, you should use a combination of both artificial and natural light. Natural sunlight, for instance, offers a warmer and more distinct appearance than it's counterpart. Assuming your bedroom has windows, embrace this natural light by pulling back the curtains and opening the blinds.

Three or More Colors

One of the most common mistakes that homeowners make when decorating their bedroom is using just one or two colors. There's nothing wrong with having a primary and secondary color, but you should still include other colors in the decor. Two colors greatly limits the aesthetic ability of your decor, creating a bland appearance that does your bedroom no justice. This is why it's a good idea to use three or more colors in your bedroom decor.

Area Rug

What's the easiest way to improve the look of your bedroom's floor? Simple: place an area rug down. Area rugs are both functional and decorative. They protect the floor from damage while creating a soft area, and they also add color and style to the environment. The key thing to remember is that you need to choose an area that matches and flows cohesively with the rest of your bedroom decor. Also, consider the material from which the area rug is made. You can find area rugs available in many different fabrics and materials, some of which include cotton, wool, polyester and polyester blends. Synthetic materials are typically more resistant to moisture and stains, but they don't offer the same level of comfort as natural organic-fiber rugs.

Decorate the Bed

Don't forget to decorate the bedroom when updating your bedroom. There are several different ways to accomplish this, one of which is changing the sheets and comforter. Another idea, however, is to simply add a blanket and throw pillows to your bed. In most bedrooms, the bed is the central focal point. And as such, it's important to decorate it with right colors and elements.
