6 Tips for Decorating a Room With Vaulted Ceilings

The presence of vaulted ceilings adds a new level of complexity to a home's decor. Characterized by one or more areas of the ceiling that slant, it's an attractive element that's become increasingly popular in modern homes. The downside to valued ceilings, however, is that it can make decorating the room more difficult. With tall, slanted ceilings, how to create an attractive and cohesive decor? If you're struggling to decorate a room with vaulted ceilings, consider the following tips.

#1) Embrace Natural Light

There's nothing more beautiful that seeing natural light shining into an open room with vaulted ceilings. So, rather than keeping your curtains and blinds closed, open them to enhance the decor. As natural light beams down, it will illuminate the surrounding space while complimenting the room's decor in the process.

#2) Paint Walls Bright

Avoid using dark colors on the walls and, instead, use a bright color. Whether it's red, yellow, orange or shades thereof, bright colors have a positive impact on the room's atmosphere and mood. They'll help to liven up your room by instilling a colorful new element. You probably won't be able to reach the vaulted ceilings -- and that's okay. Just painting the walls a bright color will improve the decor.

#3) Pendant Lighting

Although there are dozens of different lighting solutions available for rooms with vaulted ceilings, one of the most effective is pendant lighting. Basically, pendant lights hang from a long cord or pole. Once secured to the ceiling, the light will hang down, thereby making it ideal for rooms with tall ceilings (including vaulted ceilings).

#4) Tall Plants

Plants have become an integral part of modern home decor. They provide new color and style while also filtering impurities from the air. Don't use just any houseplant in a room with vaulted ceilings, though. Use a tall houseplant like the cornstalk plant. Tall plants are more effective because they balance the otherwise tall space of rooms with vaulted ceilings.

#5) Decorate the Walls

Don't underestimate the importance of decorating the walls in a room with vaulted ceilings. When left undecorated, the voided space will create the appearance of a taller and more open area. Being that the room is already tall, this is something you want to avoid. Thankfully, a solution is to decorate the walls with paintings, photographs, artwork and other accessories.

#6) Install Trim

Finally, installing trim can have a positive impact on your room's decor. Trim will reduce the amount of "open" wall space. You can even choose larger trim to take full advantage of this effect.
