6 Rules to Follow When Decorating the Master Bedroom

Planning to redecorate your master bedroom? Well, you should follow these six tips for success.

#1) Don't Place the Bed in a Corner

One all-too-common mistakes that homeowners make when decorating the master bedroom is placing the bed in a corner. This may seem like an efficient use of space, but it hurts the overall mood and aesthetics of the environment. A better approach is place the bed in the center of a wall, with only the headboard against the actual wall.

#2) Embrace Natural Light

Lighting is an important element in the master bedroom, which is why it's a good idea to keep your bedroom illuminated. Rather than using artificial lighting (e.g. fixtures), however, consider using natural lighting by opening the blinds and curtains.

#3) Clean the Clutter

The master bedroom is often a haven for clutter. After all, you'll be spending a significant amount of time here, so there's a good chance that clutter may develop. Allowing clutter to accumulate in your master bedroom, however, will take a toll on its decor. So, try to get into the habit of cleaning trash and placing items where they belong.

#4) Make Up Your Bed

If you really want to present your master bedroom as an attractive, well-decorated environment, you should make up your bed. It's difficult to achieve a clean appearance when the comforter and linens are strewn across the floor. To prevent this from happening, make up your bed in the morning.

#5) Use a Theme

When decorating your master bedroom, try to focus on a single theme. Whether it's modern, contemporary, wildlife, beach, etc., using a theme in your bedroom's decor helps to create a cohesive atmosphere in which all of the colors and elements flow together. Of course, it's a good idea to use a theme in all rooms, though it's particularly important for the master bedroom because of its significance.

#6) Utilize Space Efficiently

It's important to efficiently use the space in your master bedroom. There's no rule stating that you must squeeze all of your excess furniture into your bedroom. Even if it "physically" fits, it may create a cluttered appearance while hurting both the aesthetics and function of the room. With that said, leaving too much empty space is equally bad, as it creates a voided appearance. Use your best judgement to fill voided areas in your master bedroom without creating clutter.
