5 Tips for a Cozy Living Room

The living room is the heart and soul of modern-day homes. It's where families members gather to converse and enjoy each other's company, and it's also one of the first things guests see upon entering your home. Because of this, it's important to decorate your living room with "cozy" elements. Your living room should feel warm, relaxing and free of stress. For some helpful tips on how to design a cozy living room, keep reading.

#1) Decorate with Bright Colors

Arguably, the single most important thing to consider when decorating a cozy living room is the color palette. Dark colors bring down the mood, whereas bright colors have the opposite effect by uplifting the mood. Because of these effects, it's recommended that you stick with the latter for your living room. Decorating your living room with bright colors will enhance the atmosphere, bringing new life and vigor to your home.

#2) Potted Plants

Adding just a few strategically placed potted plants in your living room can help you create a more cozy environment. Even if it's just two or three potted plants, the natural beauty of this decorative element reduces stress and anxiety while livening up the atmosphere in the process. Furthermore, potted plants work to filter impurities from the air, promoting a cleaner home with less pollution for you and your family.

#3) Define Areas

You can also promote a more cozy environment in your living room by defining areas with console tables, end tables and area rugs. If you have a traditional L-shaped furniture arrangement, try placing a rectangular-shaped area rug and coffee table in the center (with end tables on the side). This is a simple yet effective configuration that works well in nearly all homes. By defining spaces such as this, you'll create a more naturally cozy environment.

#4) Create a Two-Tone Design

When decorating your living room, consider using two colors on the walls instead of just one. Assuming your living room features four walls, try decorating two of the walls one color and the other two walls a different color. Known as a two-tone design, it's a great way to create a more cozy living room. Just remember to choose colors that flow naturally with one another. If you paint two walls black, for instance, you shouldn't paint the other two brown (black and brown don't match).

#5) Keep it Clean

Lastly, be sure to keep your living room clean. Even if you decorate it with all the right colors and accessories, achieving a cozy environment is nearly impossible if it's cluttered.
