5 Tips for Designing an Attractive Guest Bedroom

Many homeowners overlook the importance of designing an attractive guest bedroom. They either assume that no one will see it, or that it could be better used for other purposes (like storage). As a result, they end up with an unattractive guest bedroom that doesn't match or flow cohesively with the rest of their home's decor. To prevent this from happening in your home, you should follow the tips outlined below.

#1) Don't Use it For Storage

First and foremost, you must avoid using your guest bedroom for storage. If you have some boxes or plastic contains that you need to store, place them in your garage or basement. Guest bedrooms are not the go-to place for storage. Allowing your guest bedroom to accumulate clutter is a serious mistake that will hurt your home's decor, so avoid using it for storage.

#2) Start Fresh

One of the great things about decorating a guest bedroom is the near-limitless amount of freedom it offers to use the colors and furnishings that YOU want to use. Rather than trying to create an eclectic mix, however, you should go back to the drawing board by starting fresh. Identify the primary colors and secondary colors for the decor, as well as the overall decor style.

#3) Make it Comfortable

Creating an attractive guest bedroom also requires making it comfortable. You can spend countless hours painting the walls, arranging the furniture and adding decorative accessories, but it's not going to prove useful unless it's comfortable. So, make sure your guest bedroom has comfortable sheets and a soft rug. If you want to go the extra mile, consider adding throw pillows for an added touch of comfort.

#4) Illuminate it

Your guest bedroom needs to be well lit; otherwise, the decor will suffer. There are several ways to illuminate a guest bedroom, including the use of artificial lighting as well as natural lighting. If your guest bedroom has large windows, for instance, you may be able to brighten it simply by opening the windows. If this isn't an option, consider installing a new overhead fixture or even a free-standing lamp.

#5) Keep it Low Maintenance

Finally, you should design your guest bedroom so it requires minimal work to maintain. If you use furnishings that require daily cleaning, you may find yourself overlooking basic maintenance. Over time, this neglect can result in a messy, unkempt guest bedroom.

These are just a few tips to follow when designing a guest bedroom.
