5 Tips for Decorating a Recreation Room

Also known as a ruckus room or rumpus room, a recreation room is a multi-purpose room found in many modern-day residential homes. Families often use it for lounging, watching television, playing games, reading and more. Because of its multiple purposes, however, decorating a recreation room can prove challenging. So, if you're struggling to create an attractive, functional decor in your home's recreation room, consider the following tips.

Paint the Walls

One of the first steps in decorating a recreation room is painting the walls. This will play an important role in the room's overall decor, so choose your paint color wisely. Many homeowners prefer neutral tones for their recreation room because it allows for a wider range of furniture and furnishings than bold colors. Regardless of which color you choose for the walls, make sure it flows cohesively with the surrounding decor.

Seating

Of course, you'll also need to include seating in your recreation room. There are dozens of seating options from which to choose, including couches, recliners, sectionals, stools, chairs, benches and more. Benches, for instance, are a particularly excellent choice of seating for recreational rooms, especially if there's a bar or counter top nearby.

Don't Clutter It

An all-too-common mistake homeowners make is allowing their recreation room to accumulate clutter. Since it's not a primary room like the living room or dining room, homeowners often use it to store excess furniture and belongings. Over time, this results in the recreation room becoming cluttered. And when this occurs, it's difficult to use or enjoy the room to its fullest potential.

Entertainment

Being that it has the word "recreational" in it, you should make your recreational room fun and entertaining; otherwise, it's not going to offer much value to you or your family. Assuming you have enough space in your recreational room, you should consider adding a pool table and/or dart board. This will open the doors to a whole new world of options, allowing you and your family to get more use out of this area.

Decorating the Walls

After the paint has dried, you can begin decorating the walls of your recreation room. This is where the fun really begins, as you have a near-limitless amount of freedom when decorating the walls. Some decorative accessories to consider for your recreational room include sports memorabilia, posters, framed photos, paintings and cuckoo clocks.
