5 Tips for Decorating a Kid's Room

Decorating a kid's room requires a different approach than a typical "adult" bedroom. Because children have different tastes, you should design in using colors and elements that are appealing to them. Unfortunately, many homeowners struggle when decorating kids' rooms, resulting in a lackluster appearance that doesn't offer any real aesthetic value to their home. So if you're faced with the task of decorating a kid's room, keep reading for some helpful tips.

Safety First

The most important thing to consider when decorating and/or renovating a kid's room is safety. Is the room safe for children to play? Things like exposed electrical outlets and power cords could pose a serious hazard to a small child. Power cords should be hidden from plain sight so they are inaccessible to children, and electrical outlets should be protected with baby-proof plug-ins. These are just a few safety precautions to take when decorating a kid's room, however.

Comfortable Floor

Unlike us adults, children spend a lot of their time on the floor. Whether it's watching TV, building forts, reading, or just napping, parents often find their children lying on the floor. As such, it's important to create a comfortable floor when decorating a kid's room. If there's carpet on the floor, you're in luck, because carpet is inherently softer and more comfortable than its hardwood counterpart. Even if your kid's room doesn't have carpet, though, you can still lay out a large area rug.

Make it Colorful

If you look at examples of kid's room, you'll notice that many of them feature bright colors. Red, yellow and orange are all great choices, as they instill vigor and energy into the atmosphere. So, steer clear of dark and neutral colors, and stick with bright colors when decorating your kid's room.

Storage Solutions

You should also implement some storage solutions in your kid's room. It's difficult to achieve an attractive environment if the area is cluttered and messy. Being that kids play with a lot of toys, though, this is easier said than done. How do you keep your kid's room clean and clutter-free? Well, perhaps you can place cubby bins in the corner, or another idea is to use storage trunks and chests.

Keep it Fun

Above all else, though, make your kid's room fun when decorating it. Perhaps you could paint chalk on the walls, allowing your child to draw on it. Or maybe you could design it with a vinyl wall sticker. These are just a few ways to make your kid's room fun.
