5 Things to Consider When Choosing a Bunk bed

If you're a parent or two or more kids who's looking to save space in your home, you should consider investing in a bunk bed. With it's bed-on-bed design, it's allows you to take full advantage of the vertical space in your home -- something that traditional beds cannot do. But with so many different types of bunk beds available, you may struggle to choose one. To make the process a little easier, we've compiled a list of five things to consider when shopping for a bunk bed.

#1) Material

Different bunk beds are made of different materials. Hardwood is always an excellent choice, as it offers the perfect combination of strength, durability, longevity and versatility. Bunk beds are available in other materials, however, some of which include aluminum, steel, composite and particle board, the latter of which should be avoided due to its susceptibility to damage.

#2) Size

Of course, you should consider the size of a bunk bed and whether or not it will fit in your kids' room. All bunk beds feature the same basic design in which one bed is placed atop another bed. However, they are available in a variety of sizes to support all sizes of mattresses. If your kids currently have a full-size bed, for instance, you should choose a full-size bunk bed. If you choose a different size, you'll be forced to purchase new mattresses as well.

#3) Color and Style

Pay attention to the color and style of a bunk bed. Ideally, you want to choose a color and style that flows cohesively with your kids' bedroom. If their bedroom is currently decorated with a brown color palette, for example, it's best to avoid a black bunk bed (black and brown don't match). Instead, stick with a color that flows cohesively with black.

#4) Brand

Bunk beds are manufactured and sold by dozens of different brands. When shopping for one, pay attention to the brand name. If it's a fly-by-night brand whom you've never heard, you should consider a different bunk bed.

#5) Warranty

Finally, pay attention to the warranty or warranties offered with the bunk bed. It's not uncommon for manufacturers to include a limited warranty with their bunk beds. And in some cases, the vendor or store selling the bunk bed will include their own warranty. Even if you never have to use it, a warranty provides peace of mind knowing that you are financially protected if your bunk bed breaks or otherwise fails to live up to your expectations.
