Placing an area rug down in the center can protect against this wear, allowing you to get more use of your carpet or flooring before needing to replace it.

#2) Define Furniture Arrangement

An area rug -- when used correctly -- can also define the arrangement of your living room furniture. If you have a traditional L-shaped furniture arrangement, for instance, you can place a rectangular-shaped area rug in the center to define it. Or if you have a crescent-shaped furniture arrangement, try using a circular-shaped area rug instead.

#3) Adds Color

Of course, an area rug can also add vibrant color to your living room. Colors can make or break the appearance of a room, and the living room is no exception. Choosing the wrong colors will have a lasting negative impact, creating a dull mood that does your home no justice. The right colors, however, will bring more life and vibrancy to the living room. With an area rug, you can introduce new colors to help you achieve your interior design goals.

#4) Provides Comfort

Depending on the type of area rug you choose, it can also provide comfort for your living room. This is particularly true if your living room currently features hardwood or laminate flooring. While both flooring options are stylish, hardwood and laminate isn't particularly comfortable due to its hard surface. You can fix this, however, by placing an area rug in your living room.

Last but not least, you'll have a variety of styles from which to choose when using area rugs. From traditional cotton and wool to PVC and other synthetic materials, the possibilities are endless.
