Lighting is a critical element in an effective home decor. It illuminates the surrounding environment while also adding a unique touch to the home's aesthetics. Unfortunately, though, lighting is also something that many homeowners overlook, believing it has little-to-no impact on the decor. Whether you're designing your home from scratch or looking to redesign your existing home's decor, you should follow the tips below to ensure the lighting is functional and attractive.
#1) Energy-Efficient Lighting
Don't make the mistake of choosing incandescent lighting for your home. While incandescent bulbs are typically the cheapest to buy, they also consume the most energy; therefore, you'll spend more on incandescent lighting in the long run. A better option is to choose energy-efficient lighting, such as compact fluorescent lighting (CFL) or light-emitting diode (LED).
#2) Watch for Light Reflections
Additionally, you should consider light reflections and how they impact the function of your home. Installing a larger overhead fixture in the living room, for instance, may create a glare on your television, in which case you and your family won't be able to enjoy the television with the light on. Ideally, you should avoid installing or otherwise setting up light in areas where it creates distracting reflections such as this.
You may also want to install dimming switches on certain light fixtures in your home. As you may already know, a dimming switch allows you to control the level of brightness emitted by the fixture. If you're lounging in the evening, you can turn the dimmer down. But if you're trying to read a book, you can turn the dimmer up. Dimming switches are easy to install and provide an amazing amount of versatility and convenience.
#4) Highlight Decor
You can use lighting to highlight specific elements of your home decor. If you have a cuckoo clock installed on the wall, for instance, you can use a lamp or wall sconce to illuminate it. Strategically placing light fixtures in this manner allows you to emphasize your home's decorative elements.
#5) Ease of Maintenance
How difficult is the lighting to maintain? This is something else you'll need to consider when choosing and installing lighting in your home. If the fixture is installed into a tall ceiling, you may have trouble accessing it, in which case it may go unchanged once the bulb blows.
