Most homeowners decorate their home because they are ready for a change. Even an attractive, modern home will eventually need a makeover. Regardless of your reason or reasons for redecorating, though, you should consider how it will affect your home's selling value. While some forms of decorating may lower your home's selling value, the following five methods may actually increase its value.
#1) Paint the Walls
It shouldn't come as a surprise to learn that painting the walls can increase your home's selling value. Research cited by Time found that homes with powder blue and periwinkle walls sold for $5,440 more than the same type of homes but with different wall colors. Whether you choose powder blue, periwinkle or any other color, though, a fresh coat of paint is a surefire way to improve your home's aesthetics and subsequently increase its selling value.
#2) Upgrade Appliances
You can also increase your home's selling value by updating your kitchen appliances. While most appliances last for at least 10 years, you shouldn't necessarily keep them for an entire decade. If they are old, dated or otherwise don't enhance your home's decor, consider replacing them with newer models. Buying new appliances isn't cheap, but it can increase your home's selling value, thereby making it a smart investment.
#3) Remove Popcorn Ceiling
Does your ceiling feature a popcorn texture? While this was a popular home design trend back in the 1970s, it has since faded from the limelight. Today, popcorn ceiling is a serious eyesore that should be avoided. The good news is that you can easily remove it. If one or more rooms in your home has popcorn ceiling, spray it with water and vinegar and then scrape it off. Just remember to cover the floor underneath it beforehand. Otherwise, you'll end up with a huge mess.
#4) Decorate the Walls
Your home will look more attractive and welcoming to prospective buyers if the walls are decorated. Unfortunately, this is something that many sellers seem to forget when putting their home on the market. They leave the walls blank -- or remove decorations from the walls -- which hurts their chances of scoring top dollar for their property. To prevent this from happening to your home, make sure the walls are decorated with an attractive, cohesive accessories.
#5) Arrange the Furniture
The way in which your furniture is arranged can affect your home's selling value. Simply shoving your living room or bedroom furniture against the wall isn't going to work. Rather, you should arrange it with an emphasis on functionality and aesthetics.
